The price to get your novel into a widely read eBook (of course we don't guarantee the "widely read" part, that's your job) is very inexpensive particularly compared to the cost of your print edition. You may choose among several different plans depending upon the level of work YOU are willing to do. It takes from 5-7 days to take a book through the whole process once your book is at the head of the queue. When we begin your book, we will send you an email so that you know approximately when you can expect the final product.
Price Structure for a book:
Scan/Ocr = $35 ... This will give a very rough manuscript with lots of errors in spelling, punctuation and oddities in formatting inserted during the scanning process. You will be shocked, but the file is editable. The manuscript will be in the original paperback page size so it can be compared to the print copy easily
Scan/Ocr/light cleaning = $50 ... This process will remove hidden objects and page breaks and will give a clean but unproofed manuscript, letter size with all margins set at 1". There will be no italicized text as this is removed during the cleaning (format removal) process. The Header and Footer text (page numbers, book title, author) will still show in the text but as a paragraph instead of a Header/Footer...just delete these from the text as you proof
Scan/Ocr/proof = $35 + $0.002 per page ... The manuscript is now proofed against the original text and ready for formatting. The entire document will be Styled in Normal Body Text of Times New Roman, 12 point, with basic Chapter Headings (Heading 1) and re-inserted Italics but no other Word formatting
The Whole Enchilada (or Clam Bake since our business has moved to DownEast Maine) = $30 + $0.002 per page + $30 for the final Word document which will be uploaded to Smashwords + $30 for the Word/html document converted into epub + $30 for the prc/Kindle conversion
Notice you're getting about a 14.5% break on Scanning..$5 sound better doesn't it!
So that you won't be gasping..let me put it more simply..An 80,000 word book will have a final price of $270..but a 60,000 word book would have a price of $230
We'll use the FINAL word count for the per page pricing but ignore the word count in the front matter and back matter (copyright, disclaimer, dedication, acknowledgements, letter to your readers, about the author) except for any excerpt text from other books
The reason we price by the word and not the page is that books have wildly different word counts per page. Fantasy and Sci-Fi particularly older novels are printed with very small print on very flimsy paper. Also, some books are printed with many pages with larger print. The per word price has proven to be the most fair for all concerned..you get good value, and I'm not working for $2/hour as I did on one novel with 385 pages but 158,000 WORDS
If you have already had your book scanned and converted to a text file (and proofed)..or if you have a digital file (Word.doc), then there is another price structure:
Send your digital file in a .doc or .docx format to athirstymind@sbcglobal.net or format@athirstymind.com
This file will have to be un-formatted in a process called nuclear purging and all italics must be re-inserted (so you also must mail to : A Thirsty Mind, 961 North Lubec Road, Lubec, Maine 04652 the following: a copy of the printed book or a print-out of the digital file) = $50 for the purge and re-insertion of italics, etc
Next the file is formatted for uploading into Smashwords = $30
Then the file is re-formatted for uploading into B&N (PubIt) and Kindle (KDP) = $50
The total for any ebook from a digital file is $130 ... if it is accompanied by a printed manuscript. Remember the file will not be proofed ... I am assuming that you have sent me a grammatically correct and appropriately spelled manuscript. If the file has not been proofed after scanning, then I charge a proofing fee of $0.002 per word. The word count does not include the frontmatter or backmatter text but does include any excerpts from other books, etc. If you have weblinks there is a charge of $0.25 per link.
If you have questions or have a manuscript which isn't a full length novel, please contact us and we will give you a personalized quote.
